Joseph SMITH was an unlikely name to follow successfully.
Following up on my previous entry, I worked on Hannah FAWCETT, my 2nd cousin, 4 times removed. Her 2nd marriage, in 1874, was to Joseph SMITH. This could prove difficult. The 1881 census gives his birthplace as Anslop, Buckinghamshire. This must be Hanslope, just to the north of Milton Keynes.
With a little lateral thinking, I have located him in the 1841 census, at Newport Pagnall. Milton Keynes did not exist then, and Newport Pagnall, famous for its motorway services, was probably the nearest town to Haslope.
