CORONER'S INQUEST. - On Tuesday last an inquest was held at the Fish inn here, before the coroner, Richard Wilson, Esq., on the body of Joseph Yare, a child of sixteen months' old, which had come to its death under circumstances stated by the following witnesses:- Elizabeth Yoal stated that she lives with Joseph Yare, father of the deceased. The child had been quite well on Monday (7th inst.) till about four o'clock in the afternoon, when it was near the fire place. On each side of the fire there was a tea-kettle with boiling water, and a coffee-kettle containing boiled coffee, and witness, who was in the room at the hour above mentioned, heard the child cry. Upon going to it, witness observed it to be very sick and vomiting matter of a reddish colour. Witness called to its mother, who was in the yard adjoining, and supposing the deceased had drank of the boiling tea water or coffee, used such means as they considered best. Mr. Atkinson, surgeon, was sent for, who said that the child had drawn the steam of the tea-kettle and that there was no remedy for it, It died a little before twelve o'clock on Monday night. - Ellen Yare, mother of the deceased, stated that when called in to its assistance, she examined and found its mouth, lips, and chin scalded, from which she concluded that it had applied its lips to the spout of one of the kettles. She had no doubt that her child's death was caused by being scalded. - Verdict - "Died by being accidentally scalded."

Deaths. On Wednesday, the 9th instant, at Heights, in the parish of Ormside, near Appleby. Mr. Robert Yare, aged 86 years. This venerable yeoman lived the whole of his long life on his paternal estate, and died in the room wherein he was born. He never slept from home, except one month in London, where he was obliged to go on business. His habits were eccentric, but he was much respected by his neighbours and acquaintance. His father and grandfather lived each to the age of 93.

SAD HAVOC. - Last week, while a dozen crows were taking their fill at a stack of oats in the farm-yard of Mr. Wm. Dixon, Dudmire, near Appleby, one of Mr. D's sons, a boy about 14 years of age, fired amongst them, and brought down nine. A meeting of the whole rookery has since been held, to devise measures of revenge for such wholesale slaughter, but we have not heard that the collective wisdom fixed upon any stratagem likely to answer their object. The wild ducks, too, which visit the neighbourhood of Ormside do not appear to be safe. William Yare not long ago killed six at one "fell blow."

BROUGH. - INQUEST. - On Friday, the 8th inst., an inquest was held at Brough, by Mr G. Thompson, coroner, on the body of John Yare, shoemaker, who, it appears from the depositions taken at the time, had been at Appleby fair on the 21st of August, and, on his way home, had got into William Patterson's cart (who had been at the fair with some sheep), to have a ride. The cart had high side-boards on to prevent the sheep from leaping out, and as soon as the deceased had got in and was standing in the cart, he told Patterson to drive on, and on the horse starting, deceased fell over the side of the cart on the road, falling on the back part of his head and neck. He was taken up and put into the cart again in a state of insensibility, and conveyed home. On his way there, he regained his senses, and thought he was not much worse; but upon examination by a doctor, it was found that the spine was either broken or severely injured at the neck, as he had lost all power of motion. He lingered in great pain until the 6th inst., when death put a period to his sufferings. - Verdict, "Accidentally killed by a fall from a cart."

Lillian YARE (1895)

Lillian is my first cousin twice removed, being a first cousin of my grandfather, William Thomas YARE. She was born at East Ward, Westmorland, in 1895 Q3. In 1901 she was recorded with her grandparents at South Road, Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland. In 1911 she was recorded at 2 Bartlett Street, Darlington with her parents.
She married Archibald B Reid at Darlington in 1920 Q3.
One child is easily attributed to Archibald and Lillian Reid: Joan M. Y. Reid, born at Darlington in 1921 Q3. There may be others but they are not relevant here.

Being unable to find a marriage or death record for Joan, I jumped to the conclusion that the only sensible middle name would be Yare. I googled "Yare Reid" and bingo!

Joan Margaret Yare Reid married Danny Alford Poyntz on 11th September 1948. This is recorded on page 81 of the St. Andrew's College Review, Christmas 1948.

So now the search is on, probably in Canada, for this Poyntz family.

Ancestry shows 2 census records for Danny Poyntz and 10 for Joan Poyntz, but I do not currently have access to the details.

Further searching the St. Andrews College Review, I see
(Christmas 1943, p. 71) Fifth Team Rugby: "Price, Head, Frey, Richards, and Poyntz played well all year." The team is pictured:

(Midsummer 1944, p. 10) D. A. Poyntz is on the magazine advertising staff. On p. 61 the advertising staff are shown:

Also (Christmas 1944, p. 10) that D. A. Poyntz was Asvertising Manager of the magazine. Other memtions in that issue are on p. 15 (twice). He is photographed on p. 44 with the 2nd team, Rugby.



On p. 107 we have a one-liner:
"Fine," said Poyntz when he found a neighbour had put some crackers in his bed, "I'll have breakfast in bed."
On page 109 there is an advertisement for "Alford R. Poyntz Advertising Limited.

The Midsummer 1945 Review records that "The Navy has claimed our advertising manager, D. A. Poyntz". On page 157 Danny's address is given as 160 Jameson Avenue, Toronto, Ontario

In Midsummer 1946 there is a list of serving old boys. D. A. Poyntz is listed as O/S R.C.N.V.R.

The 1956 Midsummer adition reports that Danny was at the Old Boys' Ceileidh on 25th February 1956. It also reports that he has been appointed Vice-President of Alford R. Poyntz Advertising.

Richard Dalton Yare

88, Indianapolis, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012. Richard was born on June 11, 1924 in Hull Yorkshire, England to the late Richard and Elizabeth Yare.

He served three years in the British Army as a medic and as a Sergeant. Richard attended Marist College and Boulevard Technical College while in England before moving to the U.S. to attend Purdue University. His studies included manufacturing and engineering. Richard married his love Hilda Harraway on October 18, 1947.

Richard worked in tool making, foundry making, and production and machinery from 1940—1967 before immigrating to the U.S. in 1967. From 1967-1975 Richard worked for R.C.A. of America. He helped pilot a program setting up and tooling a production line for video tape recorders. In 1977 Richard became a U.S. citizen.

In 1976 he then joined Reeder & Kline Machinery, Carmel, as a processor engineer responsible for manufacturing. He retired in 1995. Richard enjoyed golfing, traveling, and Team Purdue. He will always be remembered as The Proper English Gentleman by those that knew him.

Richard is survived by his loving wife Hilda of 65 years; their son Philip (Angie) Yare; and grandson Matthew Richard Yare. Richard was preceded in death by his two sons Anthony Yare and Michael Yare.

Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, is assisting the family during their loss. A gathering of friends and family will take place on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Yare residence.
